Hajj Badal

Hajj Badal - from Quran and Sunnah

Hajj Badal is defined as when an individual gets an obligatory Hajj pilgrimage on his or her behalf by another person.
Hajj Badal is permissible to be performed for another person, in circumstances that the person has been diagnosed with an ongoing terminal illness for which there is no recovery, or due to inability to perform Hajj because of old age or the person has already passed away.

Quran on Hajj:
And Pilgrimage to the House is incumbent upon men for the sake of Allah, (upon) every one who is able to undertake the journey to it; and whoever disbelieves, then surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above any need of the worlds.
(Al-Imran, Verse – 97)

Hajj

Hadiths related to Hajj Badal:
It was reported from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a woman from Juhaynah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) and said: “My mother vowed to go for Hajj, but she did not go for Hajj before she died. Should I do Hajj on her behalf?” He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said, “Yes, do Hajj on her behalf. Do you not think that if your mother was in debt you would pay it off for her? Pay off the debt that is owed to Allah, for Allah is more deserving that what is owed to Him should be paid off.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1754)

When Can Hajj Badal Be Performed?

Hajj Badal is a Hajj performed on behalf of someone who Hajj was obligatory but they are unable to perform Hajj because:

1) Physically incapable. ie, paralysed or elderly.
2) A sick person from an illness with no hope of recovery. This does not include temporary illness, where there is hope of recovery; one who is insane, because there is hope he will return to his senses; or one who is imprisoned, because there is hope he will be released.
3) One who has passed away. If a muslim dies without having performed the obligatory Hajj, and he or she met all the conditions of it being obligatory, then it is obligatory to perform Hajj on his/her behalf from the wealth he/she left behind, whether he/she left instructions to that effect or not.
